Biofuels Capacity & Feedstock Consumption | Boiler Tubing
In March of this year, the U.S. biofuels capacity expanded & feedstock consumption increased. Rosa Operating, LLC provides Boiler Tubing that has the ability to maximize efficiency in each phase of your production process.
Here in the United States, the operable biofuels capacity expanded by 381 MMgy in March, specifically with gains for renewable diesel, ethanol and biodiesel. Total feedstock consumption was at 27.087 billion pounds in March, which is up from 24.537 billion pounds the previous month.
Operable Biofuels Capacity
The total U.S. operable biofuels capacity reached 23.099 billion gallons per year in March, which is currently up 381 MMgy when compared to the 22.718 billion gallons of capacity that was reported for the previous month. When comparing the 22.022 billion gallons of capacity that was in place in March of 2022, the total operable biofuels capacity has increased 2.077 billion gallons per year.
Fuel Ethanol Capacity
In the month of March, the fuel ethanol capacity was at 17.734 billion gallons. This is an increase by 339 MMgy, when compared to the previous month. If you compare the fuel ethanol capacity to the same month of last year, it has also increased by 411 MMgy.
Biodiesel Capacity
The biodiesel capacity expanded in March, particularly to 2.087 billion gallons per year. When compared to the month of February, the biodiesel capacity is up by 24 MMgy. However, when compared to March of 2022, it is down 144 MMgy.

- Renewable jet fuel
- Renewable naphtha
- Renewable gasoline
- Other biofuels & bio intermediates
Feedstock Consumption
U.S. biofuel producers consumed, approximately, 27.087 billion pounds of feedstock in the month of March. This is an increase of 2.55 billion pounds, when compared to the 24.537 billion pounds of feedstock that was consumed in February. Although, it has gone down 106 million pounds, when compared to the 27.193 billion pounds of feedstock that was previously consumed in March of 2022.
Corn & Grain Sorghum Consumption
In March, biofuel producers consumed 24.424 billion pounds of corn. This is an increase from 22.33 billion pounds the previous month. On the other hand, this is down from the 25.383 billion pounds that was consumed in March of last year.
The grain sorghum consumption was at 242 million pounds in March, which is an increase from 208 million pounds in February, as well as an increase from 97 million pounds in March of 2022.
Soybean Oil Consumption
In the month of March, a total of 953 million pounds of soybean oil was consumed by U.S. biofuel producers.

- 360 million pounds was consumed by renewable diesel facilities
In February, the consumption of soybean oil was at 910 million pounds.
- 536 million pounds was consumed by biodiesel plants
- 374 million pounds was consumed by renewable diesel plants
When it comes to March of 2022, soybean oil consumption was at 908 million pounds.
- 655 million pounds went to biodiesel production
- 253 million pounds went to renewable diesel production
Canola Oil & Corn Oil Consumption
Canola oil consumption reached 322 million pounds in March of this year. This is an increase from 168 million pounds in February. The EIA is withholding the volume of canola oil that went to biofuel production in March of 2022, in order to avoid disclosure of individual company data.
Corn oil consumption was at 220 million pounds in March. This is, ultimately, up from 207 million pounds the previous month and 212 million pounds in March of last year.
Yellow Grease, Beef Tallow, White Grease & Poultry Fat Consumption
In March, biofuel producers additionally consumed:
- 562 million pounds of yellow grease
- 239 million pounds of beef tallow
- 45 million pounds of white grease
- 9 million pounds of poultry fat
In February, consumption was at:
- 404 million pounds of yellow grease
- 192 million pounds of beef tallow
- 33 million pounds of white grease
- 22 million pounds of poultry fat
In March of 2022, consumption was at:
- 338 million pounds of yellow grease
- 127 million pounds of beef tallow
- 47 million pounds of white grease
- 15 million pounds of poultry fat
Other Recycled Feeds & Waste Consumption
There was an additional 71 million pounds of feedstock that went to biofuel production in the month of March, which is identified as other recycled feeds and waste. This is an increase from 63 million pounds in February and, also, an increase from 66 million pounds in March of 2022.
In March, the EIA withheld data on several other types of feedstock, as well - including yard and food waste, “other” fats, oils and greases, as well as feedstock that is categorized as “other". This is to avoid disclosure of individual company data.
